(Cover page from the paper issue) President’s Message... This
fall I attended a full day conference on “Growing Healthy Kids in
Kentucky” offered by the Kentucky Dietetic Association.
In attendance were teachers and specialists in all the health
related fields that impact the lives of youth in school and community.
The focus was on diet, physical activity, sleep, diabetes,
smoking and obesity, now urgent national concerns.
I thought how BODY RECALL was first developed for adults who had
gotten away from being physically active.
Body systems began to erode in noticeable ways that medicine and
surgery failed to address. As appropriate fitness programs for adults emerged, adults
began to embrace exercise as a way to increase physical comfort,
wellness, and life support. It
worked! While the healthcare problems of older adults have become an economic disaster and political football, we have been oblivious to the weaknesses in then next generations that will be taking their place. What we take into the body and the amount of physical activity we engage in are adjustable. Adults are capable of controlling these factors by skill and will, but growing kids need a lot of help in formulating healthful habits. These lifestyle habits must not be delayed! Serving as role models for grandchildren and great grandchildren may be our most beneficial influence. I am working with a 5th grade class in a small county school nearby, and the students are responding well to Body Recall as we move through a 4-week fitness module of musically accompanied exercises. My teaching fits into the daily school schedule rather than after school. Not only are we able to provide a total fitness session that contributes to academic success throughout the students’ school day, but the lifetime fitness concepts go home to the parents and families as well. BODY RECALL has gained the trust of administrators and teachers in this school, and that is a cherished position. In the box on page 8 of the textbook we read; “No one is exempt from the need to exercise if wellness is to be maintained.” Our program appeals to all ages. Helen Taylor (10/95), Kingsport, TN is working with 4-year olds in a program she entitled “Wee BODY RECALL.” Many of you have classes that include persons in their 90’s or older. From 4 to 100 is a pretty wide lifetime spread! Your influence is powerful, and I know your confidence in BODY RECALL will reward you greatly as you maintain your own lifetime goal of wellness. We have much to be thankful for. Blessings and thanksgiving. (signed) Dorothy Chrisman I
