(Cover page from the paper issue)            PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Don’t throw anything of value away!

There are a lot of ways to estimate “value,”  but no one will question the importance of mobility as being of great personal value.  Of all things we own, mobility is the closest thing to us that we have full control  over.  Think about that!  From the beginning, our work in BODY RECALL addresses the mobility level we had when we entered the program.  We have ways to measure the levels we gain as we progress. The questions on page 184 of the textbook give us an opportunity to reflect on things that determine mobility and well being. Answers to these are based on habits, knowledge, and individual follow through. Since fitness is not static, it is important to evaluate our response to these values frequently. Regularity of class attendance is a direct way to do this, because all BODY RECALL lessons contain materials that address everything on page 184. It is obvious to us when necessary movement skills are missing.  When we expect the help these skills lend the choices we  select as adapters make a big difference.  How encouraging it is to know that we don’t have to be stuck!  We know that even simple movements can begin to restore us.

There is a difference between being healthy and having full mobility. We read and hear that we Americans are the healthiest we’ve ever been. This is not to be confused with one’s fitness level, however we want both things, health and fitness.  Although they are related, and influence each other, these conditions are acquired from different sources. mobility comes only  through movement, sick or well. Still we must have mobility to enable any management of our lives. People can be hospitalized for a time, and if they appreciate how much movement contributes to wellness, they look for ways to activate muscles and joints without threatening serious conditions they may be recovering from.

Immobility takes a serious toll on confidence and the full ability to function well.  Everyday movement offers too little support for encroaching physical losses. Ideally, we must counter!  If we have a way to proceed, we will be ready to prevent before trouble comes. This is when we appreciate a well-balanced, non-threatening program of exercise such as BODY RECALL in which the mind as well as the body can be prepared for positive responses and options to change. For two decades I have been writing special messages through these Newsletters to teachers of BODY RECALL, students and friends in the Alliance, benefactors and those who have an interest in our progress.  I have always had one basic message: Do not be extravagant with the physical skills you value and need.  Sedentary lives breed disease and weakness.  Movement is essential in prevention and rehabilitation! Determination to age successfully requires acquaintance with, and practice of, the most thorough range of motion (joints), strength development, relaxation, balance and coordination.  These goals should be pleasant and possible to accomplish, and it should be a priority.  (Review the last paragraph on pages 7 and 10 in your textbook.)  Students of BODY RECALL can depend on fine leadership, thanks to the army of well-trained teachers.  Teachers, you are doing a fantastic job!

All of us thank you.

Blessings,
