PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

According to the December AARP BULLETIN, AARP Executive Director, Horace Deets, said 475 million dollars in government funds were recently appropriated as a result of the reauthorization of the Older Americans Act. With this, he said, we can give people choices that help them "live life on their own terms." If money is to provide such great rewards, the focus should be placed on solid training programs for those who work with adult populations in self-help procedure. That would include well taught, quality fitness programs. Also, health and fitness should be a top priority in addressing the hysteria over who will pay for prescription drugs. Attacking the root problem rather than the symptoms of physical breakdown will be the correct way to alleviate the need of drag use. Education is the key to increased management of health and fitness changes that are satisfying and dependable.

Health and fitness cannot be bought...they must be earned!  Health and fitness can't be stored.  They are by-products of continuous lifestyle choices. Even though the matter of fitness is being well addressed in the media, it is a sad thing that people avoid choices that lead to physical wellness and comfort apart from drugs. The concept &possible exercise for people in all conditions is foreign to the masses still. We seem to be losing ground, or we're getting tired of the message and the battle to regain the movement we have lost. It may take a different period of time, but education through programs like BODY RECALL is likely to be more potent, pleasant and lasting. The side effects occurtin4~ through regular exercise are amazing, welcome and beneficial. (See NEWS FROM YOU.) Addressing our problems through the quick fix method (drugs) may tend to throw us into more dependency with little rebate.

Operation of senior centers continues to be a purposeful use of government funds. These funds would go further to assist adults to live beyond their perceived limitations. Under the guidance of certified BODY RECALL teachers, students reform their expectations of physical skills to better access the quiet and unused potential of movement they have previously neglected. Since much of BODY RECALL work leads to better self-management and increased personal security and involvement, we can understand why students often report improvement and freedom from discomforts that medical intervention and expensive drugs could not correct. BODY RECALL teachers recognize the broader advantages exercise can offer, because we constantly encounter positive changes in our contacts with students.

If we rely on research of the last twenty years, we acknowledge the unusual and exclusively superior values proper exercise offers. I am pleased that BODY RECALL has proven to be a successful way to provide thousands with good alternatives for more wellness.

Keep in mind that the Older Americans Act (OAA) now will also provide states and municipalities greater flexibility in administering programs based on their own defined needs and priorities "...The door is wide open to us to show and tell about BODY RECALL. Workshops should provide insight into our fine teacher training program Workshops could give voice to the choice of quality exercise programs in centers everywhere. The Community Services funds (Title V section of OAA) exists to target adult populations. Let us hope that help comes through the application &these funds.

I appreciate the classes you lead, the pictures you send, the publicity you attract, and the gratitude your students express for your leadership in BODY RECALL. Blessings to all,
                                                                                              (signed)

HEADQUARTERS

It has been a long winter at Headquarters!  Signs of spring are welcome, and with springtime will come the finishing touches of our long-awaited, training/classroom, new offices and teacher lounge area, storage rooms, and "routine" once more.  The staff has adapted to total mess, clutter, grime and very limited work areas.  Each working day has been punctuated with sounds of construction-so much that Sparkle retreats trader Carol's bed, from which she appears only after the last truck leaves the driveway at night.  Dorothy finally moved to her home computer to accomplish necessary writing.  Carol rides the waves of chaos with calm and efficiency.  Darlene and Becky continue their accommodating perspectives.  At first we attempted to keep abreast of typical activity as well as clean-ups at the end of the day, inside and out.  We were overwhelmed in the long run, needless to say.  I believe our equilibrium will be restored once again, though, by the excitement of new frontiers of order and service.  The OPEN HOUSE date is still not scheduled.

(see photos and a progress update on the Headquarters Remodeling Project)

We have inherited a compelling opportunity. Each time we have had to adapt to changing conditions and circumstances the cost of maintenance and growth exceed previous operating budgets.  This is a familiar "crossroads" for BODY RECALL.  We now have a very large plant to operate with more space to heat, more rooms to illuminate, and more doors and windows to secure.  However, the cost of progress, change and success must not block our important mission of lifetime fitness!  BODY RECALL, will provide all of us with a purposeful mission that matches the wealth of having access to classes under well trained, committed educators.

Sufficient health and fitness for our days is the main product of BODY RECALL.
Our business at Headquarters is to pass along what we know to help others achieve this.

BODY RECALL TEACHER TRAINING is the BEST!!!
All people who teach the
program come to Headquarters for a week of training that prepares them for success in the classroom.  At the completion, nursing professionals may request 30 ceu's from the Berea College Nursing Dept.  Therapists may be granted 5 1/2 ceu's from Eastern Kentucky University.  Our trainings are designed as a thorough orientation for adult fitness.  The growth and future of BODY RECALL depends upon our ability to continue to provide qualified, confident leadership.
We will use the building well.

The length of training is significant.  The 5 1/2 days serves to deepen training skills and prepare individuals in specific ways to commit to the BODY RECALL approach to exercise.  The breadth of training leaves nothing lacking in preparatory techniques for classroom success.  Required practice teaching reveals individual leadership style and ways to enhance teaching techniques.  Adequate review of sequential exercise pieces that serve as student incentives gives new trainees the progressive tools for immediate success in the classroom.

  • Under qualified TRAINERS, new teachers observe and develop skills in teaching the textbook, BODY RECALL: A PROGRAM OF PHYSICAL FITNESS FOR THE ADULT by Dorothy Chrisman.

  • A laboratory of adult students participates in the training week to help new teachers feel at ease with use of simple exercise equipment, and one-on-one student contact.

  • Seeing is believing!  Adult laboratory students provide a demonstration and sharing session to reveal why adults remain in BODY RECALL classes.

  • Exposure to workshop videos, TV interviews and segments that give expression to characteristics of the BODY RECALL program to new audiences.

  • Personal recording practice of selected training materials for home study.

  • Active work-through of all exercises in the text.

  • Participation in all of the Falls and Recovery material recorded in the textbook.

  • Brief library research and verbal reports.

At the conclusion of the training week, those who qualify are given certification, which lasts three years before renewal is required.

LET'S HEAR IT FOR THE TEACHERS

"Our teacher sets a good example through encouragement and faith.  Shows interest in each individual as well as accomplishments of the group.  The class is a delight to be a part of. Everyone is special and it is a good mood booster!"

"It is wonderful to have a brand new instructor who is so thorough and so dedicated with so much knowledge.  She is personality plus and makes this class a real joy."

"Our teacher does a lot of preparation for the class.  She leads the class very professionally.  She is friendly and helps us understand the importance of keeping our bodies healthy through daily physical motions."

"He is patient with us.  He is always encouraging us to do what we can do."

"She is so upbeat and kind.  Really encouraging and a great sense of humor.  At my age I need that!!" "She is always prepared with the necessary equipment for every lesson. We leave the class realizing we have been put through the paces.  Her devotion to this adjunct to physical enjoyment earns our gratitude.  BODY RECALL is fun, and it is life enhancing.  We are inheritors of her generous time and talent in teaching BODY RECALL to us."

"She speaks so we can hear her.  She is always on time and gives us an excellent workout."

"Enlarged admiration and respect for BODY RECALL instructors --- especially their training and dedication.”

COME TO THE 21st ANNUAL BODY RECALL FESTIVAL

BEREA, KENTUCKY
June 8, 9 & 10, 2001

We expect to hold the festivities right here at HEADQUARTERS in Berea, Kentucky.  The large new classroom will make a great FESTIVAL arena.  We have an observation room on the second floor that will give visibility to all that takes place.  Unlike a gymnasium, the room affords a wonderful view of the beautiful surroundings we enjoy at the Center.  Ample rest rooms, drinking fountains, and a good sound system will be comforting for all of us.

As I write this, we have not yet occupied the space, but a lot can happen in 2 1/2 months.  The staff is ready to put everything in order when the floor is finally installed.  As we anticipate the Intermediate Teacher Training Week preceding our big weekend, all of us will be hanging banners, moving the chairs in, displaying award plaques, and tending the grounds near the new building.  We will have parking near the entrance door for those who require it, and ample parking spaces within comfortable walking distance for the larger crowd.

a demo routine from the 2000 Festival

The FESTIVAL is a rally or Homecoming for BODY RECALL students and teachers and their guests.  This year it will be special to tour all of the building site and learn about the adjustments we have brought about in the facility.  It is rewarding to know that together we have financed the entire structure, which we believe will meet the needs of our work and activities.  Now that it is nearing completion, our commitment is to find ways to operate and maintain the new structure.  We used all of our resources to arrive at this juncture, but the most priceless commodity we have is the program itself!  A worthy reason for all the toil, hopes, plans, and now the confirmation.  It is exciting to participate in dreams that do come true.

Our "new home" is very handsome and well worth a visit to see it.  The FESTIVAL event is the perfect way to witness how it functions.  The Berea class that meets regularly in the room will be prepared to share a new sequence in celebration of our blessings and of your coming!  There will be other presentations of significance during the weekend.  You won't want to miss a thing.  So, y'all come and see what your gifts have brought about.  Meet the terrific teachers of BODY RECALL from every part of the nation, and get your "shot" of fitness in the process.

 See You There!

The BODY RECALL ALLIANCE:

The last page of the NEWSLETTER is reserved for your opportunity to make a donation to support the good work and outreach of BODY RECALL.  As this letter is being sent out, the ninth edition of the BODY RECALL text is being printed, with a price tag of $35,000.  The text is the backbone and major funding of our program.  Providing copies for BODY RECALL students, teachers and Trainers is essential.  The 8th edition supplied us with 20,000 books.  We ordered half that many for the 9th edition to avoid possible indebtedness at this crucial time.  Presently, we are investing in the Spanish translation of the text so that Hispanic populations may be reached with the Lifetime Fitness message.  The pilot program with such a class will take place as soon as the Spanish edition is available.  We must raise the funds to cover the cost. (Approximately $23,000 plus the translator's fee.)  The manuscript is being sent directly to the printer as pages are completed.  We should see the full product by September.  The geothermal installation we asked for will ensure perfect climate control at much less the cost of oil for heat and air-conditioning, but it strained our resources to apply the system at this appropriate but overloaded time.  Right now we need a newer travel van in order to continue the visibility that has given BODY RECALL national recognition.  If you know of an affordable van, or a donor who believes as we do, that our outreach is crucial to our continued growth, please make contact with Headquarters.

FESTIVAL time is the beginning of the new year for us.  We hope you will thoughtfully consider sending us a contribution now.  Please take the opportunity to complete the ALLIANCE form below and mail it back to us soon.. We would like to report at the FESTIVAL AWARD BREAKFAST how, in finding our own values in BODY RECALL, we understand the responsibility to pass these advantages along to others.
